The selected story is the violent arrest that resulted in an officer being assaulted in Merrylands on 20 March last. The two online news sites used for comparison are the Daily Telegraph (“Telegraph”) and Yahoo 7 News (“Yahoo”).
There are significant differences between the two sites’ use of photographs and video footage. Writers of the telegraph article did not include any original photographs, but rather screenshot video coverage of the incident by Channel 9 news. On the other hand, Yahoo embedded an original video of the story. Furthermore Yahoo include two interviews from former detective Tim Priest and NSW Council of Civil Liberties Stephen Blanks.
Sentence structure and word choice differ between the two articles. In the former, the language seems to be more formal and sentences are longer in length. For example, Telegraph uses the phrase, ‘inspector assaulted in violent Merrylands arrest’. Yahoo tends to use rather informal words, such as ‘punched’ rather than ‘assault’.
